versatility from draft picks
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers general supervisor Trent Baalke looked for one clear trait to shine over all other people when evaluating players forward with the NFL draft: Versatility. Kenyon Martin Powder #6 Blue jersey
That was the word Baalke used more than and over again during a film session with defeat writers Thursday, breaking down tape on all of San Francisco's ten picks and displaying why the team believes each was the proper choice.
"What's their versatility? What is their impact on the group? We would like guys to be able to complete a variety of issues," Baalke said. "We want men who deliver worth towards the group and are great at much more than just one thing."
With the exception of second-round choose Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers expect all their new rookies to complete multiple things and play multiple positions.
Baalke invested the bulk with the almost two-hour session dissecting Kaepernick's play at Nevada, highlighting traits that convinced San Francisco he can be the quarterback of the long term. The ability to improvise with his athleticism and make some thing from nothing was perhaps the most intriguing of Kaepernick's abilities for your 49ers.
Among the eye-popping plays that impressed Baalke on film coincidentally arrived in San Francisco in the Battle Hunger Bowl against Boston School: Kaepernick drops back, looks left, appears right, then fires a pass more than the center to his tight end streaking across the center as 5 players -- each safeties and all three linebackers -- converge on the play, tucking the ball into a tight seam to get a crucial completion.
While some might phone it a bad choice to throw into 5 defenders, Baalke saw it as being a gutsy transfer that the 49ers need their quarterback to complete in the encounter of pressure.
"Do I would like him generating that throw? Absolutely," Baalke stated. "I desire a man that's confident enough to throw it in to the defense."
The 49ers do not plan to tinker with Kaepernick's considerably unconventional delivery, which is in between a sidearm and over-the-top movement. Baalke equated it to the various styles of golf swings or batting stances that can be effective within their own methods.
"It's the finish result that matters," he stated.
What San Francisco does strategy to alter is a number of its draftees' positions.
Amongst the notables: No. seven general choose Aldon Smith was a defensive lineman at Missouri but will play outdoors linebacker in a 3-4 scheme; South Carolina's Chris Culliver will make the switch from safety to cornerback; Central Florida defensive end Bruce Miller will move to fullback; and Michael Individual of Montana State can make the transfer from left tackle to guard. The 49ers also expect almost everybody -- apart from Smith and Kaepernick -- to lead to special teams immediately. Not that any of these moves might consider place this summer.
With the NFL lockout already canceling some offseason routines, the transition from school may only be more complicated for gamers in this offseason of uncertainty.
Just a few veterans received playbooks throughout the brief time the lockout was lifted a couple of weeks ago, and the relaxation may have to seek out copies from teammates or fend for on their own to find out new coach Jim Harbaugh's system.
"The lockout has definitely produced some hurdles," Baalke stated. "The new coaching staff, new terminology. But hurdles have to be overcome. And we'll find a way to recover from them and clear them."
